To calculate the approximate internal crate area with a crate mattress in position.

As a rule of thumb guide: please take the approximate height/depth measurement of the mattress of your choice (noted below) to the internal height measurements of the crates (noted above) to ensure your dog has enough internal space to move freely around, sit, stand, snooze etc.

  • Standard Polyester Crate Mattress Height/Depth:   6"  (15cm)    Please take 15 cm from the internal height of the desired crate to calculate the free internal space

  • Memory Foam Crate Mattress Height/Depth:            3.3" (8cm)    Please take 8 cm from the internal height of the desired crate to calculate the free internal space

A little thought on single door or double door wire dog crates.

My research into dog crates and the benefits began with the impending arrival of our little puppy Ottilie Lettuce, she and her little siblings (all 6 of them) were born on the first day of the UK lockdown and we did not know when we would be able to make the rounds trip of 145 miles to collect her. We all know that around the age of 5 weeks puppies find their wings and start running around the garden and Anne had to draft in her granddaughter into her bubble to help keep them from running off into the garden. They soon rigged up play pens in the garden and when they fell exhausted into bed at night it was time to invest in a few dog crate sets too. The lockdown was extended of course and Anne advised it was best to invest in a crate as all the puppies had become to love their quiet time and it was routine. And, so it was, my first ever adventure into crate training and so the research began. 1 door should be fine surely? - but what if we move it to another room or pop it into the car and cannot open the door? - ok 2 doors then. How do we carry it around, are they transportable?. How do we clean the crate. All sorts of questions that a new owner of dog crates would ask and, so I picked up the phone and started calling the experts which are the breeders and then the suppliers and then the manufacturers, it took 5 weeks of research as of course by this stage I was invested and understood the features and benefits. Dog crate training is not for everyone, there are various blogs and forums and invariably you get the narcissism that sadly is around every corner, even in business. Cut through that and ask why you would invest and how you would use it, put it simply you are offering a quiet space to call their own, it is not a space where they feel they are shut away, it is a natural instinct to go to a quiet corner to sleep, or indeed jump on the big bed as that's where the humans live. Creating a happy space is important, it is routine, they can come and go from a crate set whenever they feel the need or, in the case of puppy training or much needed crate rest after surgery it is a vital part of the day, rest and sleep is what our dogs do almost 80% of their day and so it's our job as makers to offer you the best in choices, quality and of course Va Va Woof luxury.

The short version: I was advised by 7 out of 9 suppliers and manufacturers to invest in a double door dog crate, for the uplift in cost of £7 - £14 depending on if it was a medium dog crate of XL dog crate it offers total peace of mind if you need to move the crate set to another room with less floor space to open the wider door with more natural light and airflow through creating a natural canopy that your dog will love and their special quiet space to call their very own. We were also universally advised to invest in a fully transportable dog crate with a carry handle, pull out rigid base tray for cleaning and ensure that each door has 2 sliding latches that drop down into position. Powder coated wire offers protection against nasty wire edges that can be missed when sealing the edging and ensure the wire production is high quality.

Sizing:  Medium dog crates and X Large dog crates are the most popular in sizing. If you do have a larger dog breed there are XXL dog crates widely available but we would truly recommend that you look for a specialist steel manufactured dog crate as the normal width of wire will not cope with the volume weight and pressure of a large breed.
